Saltillo tile is a beautiful handmade clay tile imported directly from Mexico. Saltillo tiles vary in color and shape, but most tiles have fantastic variations and combinations of reds, oranges and yellows.
Out tiles are available in two different formats. Super or Regular. There is no difference in the quality of the saltillo between regular and super, just in the finished look of the tiles.
"Regular" saltillo is formed into tile squares and the tiles have "square" regular edges.
"Super" saltillo is shaped by pressing quarried clay with a wooden frame or mold. This process allows for more of soft, rounded edge and also presses out some of the imperfections and chipped edges in the saltillo.
Our tiles are available sealed or unsealed. Unsealed tiles should be sealed several times prior to grouting. It is typically much easier to install presealed saltillo tile. We offer saltillo with a water based sealer or saltillo with an oil based sealer. The water based sealer gives the saltillo a more natural look. The oil based sealer will provide darker, deeper, more vibrant colors. Generally oil based sealers perform better when used outdoors.

All saltillo tiles have imperfections such as chips, cracks, indentations, and huge color variations. The tiles are not always square or flat, and vary in size and thickness from one piece to the next. The pieces may even have occassional animal footprints or leaf prints in them that occur during the drying process. These imperfections are all naturally inherent in saltillo tile and are part of what gives the saltillo tiles their character.
